Hand Crank Sock Knitting Demonstration

Local artisan, Kathy Roletter, will demonstrate knitting beautiful socks on a vintage knitting machine.

Sunday March 8, 1-4pm

Saturday, March 14, 11-4pm

Knitting machines such as the one Kathy uses, were given out during World Wars I and II by the American Red Cross, in order to supply socks to the soldiers who were waging war in the trenches of Europe.  The soldiers were constantly subjected to wet feet, resulting in inevitable foot diseases.  The Red Cross provided hundreds of women across our country with a portable hand crank knitting machine and a supply of army drab color wool.  The machine was theirs to keep, as long as they completed their socks.  If the volunteer was busy with other duties, or procrastinated, the machine and the wool were sent to another willing volunteer.  This country wide effort helped to supply much needed socks for our soldiers during the wars.   During the Depression, the machines were used to knit socks for additional family income, and to supply the family with thier own socks.

Now, Kathy uses one of these same knitting machines to knit socks of glorious colors and patterns.

Unique offerings by local artisans

Stoney Run Artisans is pleased to welcome visitors to our shop in Downtown McGaheysville. You will find beautiful offerings from talented artists.  Many are on hand to meet personally, even to sign purchased work.  We hope you will enjoy interacting with these talented individuals and discussing the insight of their product.  You will find some of your favorite artists here, and some "soon to be" favorites!

Our gallery is located in the Stonewall Bank Building (1920 - 1933), across from the McGaheysville Post Office.  Inside you will find the original bank vault from the 1920s  and a working public telephone booth made of oak.

In addition to the artisans, Highland Designs of Richmond, Virginia, has space inside the building. Beautiful furniture, decor pieces, lamps, antiques, and other unique items are offered.

We accept VISA, MasterCard, Square, Discover, American Express, and good ol' cash.

The space at Stoney Run Artisans is large and welcoming, providing visitors with the perfect atmosphere to stroll through and enjoy all we have to offer.

We believe individuals should have access to art and culture in their daily lives. It's our goal to provide a medium between art enthusiasts and the artists themselves.

Our Gallery is the perfect blend of old and new, and we hope you enjoy visiting this historic building.

Stoney Run is the creek that runs through this part of the Shenandoah Valley, and can be enjoyed just to the right of the Gallery.
